Ferrous gluconate (Iron supplements)

I was told by my Dr's office that I needed to start Iron supplements.  They gave me script, but apparently it is something that is over the counter as well.  They told me to take it every other day, and that should help.  Well- apparently that fool doesn't get it..so I knew I should take it every day.  I finally put two and two together, and realized...it really makes my tummy hurt, and I don't get constipated, I get urgent needs to go.  (Not like me,)  Then my whole system just feels yucky.  (I tried taking with food, after food, before)...it's just not nice on my system.  But I know I need it.  Plus- this is unusual for me too...I can't stomach the thought of most meats..so it's not like I am getting iron from meat or the other suggested high iron things (not that I would absorb that)...Confused, and worried because I don't want this to become a critical issue...mean time I am taking the supplement and literally feeling crappy.  Perhaps the other types of iron are more gentle on the stomach.  Thanks for any advise.

Carbonyl iron is the easiest on the stomach and GI tract.

The only iron supplement I've been able to take effectively and without side effects is a chewable I got from www.bariatriceating.com

I'm actually out and need to get some more - I've been out for awhile now.

I currently use Celebrate, chewable bariatric iron pills. (ferrous fumarate, plus vitamin c) I don't have any issues with them.

But I've also used caronyl iron (TenderIron from Vitalady, you can swallow or chew them, but you have to take a separate vitamin c with it) without issues.  In fact, I gave my leftover ones to my 94-year old grandmother who needed to start on iron, and she's had no stomach problems either.

So i guess i'd just try something else :) Best of luck!

I take one every other day with this pregnancy and got them at Walmart.  I take them at bedtime so that I don't really feel the tummy upset if it happens...and so far, I haven't felt anything.  However, if I do take them every day, the plumbing gets clogged so that's why I do the every other day.  So far, awesome labs!

Good luck!
